The European Parliament Incriminated Geshev and GERB in Lying
The Meeting of Democracy, the Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group as of 28 August was organized on the group's own initiative and was focused on recent events in Bulgaria in relation to democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights, in particular media freedom, the independence of the judiciary and the separation of powers. This is stated in a position circulated by the European Parliament's press office, which in practice refuted the information of the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office and the government of GERB.
On the day of the meeting, the press center of the Prosecutor's office published a message stating that: "The discussion was organized by the European Parliament on a proposal from The Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev to discuss the current challenges facing the Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Bulgaria in the context of increased political and media pressure".
GERB's website posted a comment by MEP Emil Radev on the occasion of the closed meeting of the monitoring group. Radev is quoted as saying the following: "MEPs have condemned the use of gallows, coffins and body bags during the protests in Bulgaria. The position was expressed at the meeting of the Subcommittee on the Rule of Law of the European Parliament's Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs on which the situation of the rule of law in Bulgaria was considered ".
In response, Democracy, the Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group stated that several participants, as well as other persons who did not participate in the meeting, have disseminated details of the discussion.
"In this context, we note the statement of the Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office and other participants. All statements reflect exclusively and merely their observations. These statements contain allegations not shared by DRFMG.", the EP communication states.
DRFMG will report to the EP's Committee on Civil Liberties (LIBE) on the monitoring in general, our conclusions of the above-mentioned hearing, as well as the answers to the question with a request for a written answer, which will be provided to the Bulgarian authorities.
