Radan Kanev Has Requested a Debate in the European Parliament on the Crisis of BG Institutions
On August 14, the "Democratic Bulgaria" MEP Radan Kanev submitted a request to the office of the European Parliament, supported by 55 MEPs, for a plenary debate on the institutional crisis in Bulgaria.
Kanev posted on his Facebook profile the questions addressed to the European Commission:
How does the Commission assess the current situation in Bulgaria in terms of media freedom, anti-corruption reforms and the independence of the judiciary?
What EU level instruments can be activated to prevent further deterioration of the rule of law in Bulgaria?
What specific steps has the Commission taken with regard to Bulgaria and what additional recommendations can be effective in improving the situation?
"My colleague Elena Yoncheva and her team also made an invaluable contribution to the formulation of the questions and the collection of the required number of signatures. It’s the first time that our mutual efforts have enabled us to put the rule of law and media freedom in Bulgaria at the center of the political debate at European level. I will do my best to urge the Presidential Council of the EP to include the debate in the agenda of the plenary hall, including a political debate within the EPP group," Kanev wrote.
