Rumyana Kyuchukova, CEO of the first GSM operator in Bulgaria MobilTel, is the first female awarded the prestigious economist of the year prize, winning the Ms Economics 2001 title, conferred at an official ceremony in the Hilton Sofia Hotel on January 17. MobilTel's CEO won the prize in the sixth edition of the national contest, organized by the Bulgarian magazine Economics. The other nominees worthy of the Mr Economics 2001 title (especially changed to Ms Economics 2001 because of the lady-winner) were: Nikolai Vassilev, Deputy Premier and Minister of Economy, Milen Velchev, Minister of Finanace, Martin Zaimov, Vice Governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, and Prof. Ivan Angelov from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.The aim of the contest is to distinguish the person with the highest contribution thoughout the year for the development of the Bulgarian economy by clever managerial decisions, fair economic performance, or fundamental scientific work. The magazine conducted a poll among 300 outstanding representatives of business, science, management and media in Bulgaria, and the economist of 2001 prize went to Ms Kyuchukova as a reward for her decisive contribution and impressive performance of MobilTel AD over the last two years. The GSM-operator has already attracted more than 1,000,000 subscribers.Ms Economics 2001 began her professional career in 1981 in the foreign-trade organisation Intercommerce. She was appointed an economic advisor at MobilTel AD in 1998, and became CEO of the company in 2000.
