ENEL COMMISSIONED UNIT 3 OF MARITSA IZTOK-3
Unit 3 of Maritsa Iztok-3 and the second sulphur purification installation were commissioned a month and a half earlier than scheduled, the thermal power plant's owner - Italy's Enel - announced on April 2.
The rehabilitated turbine had successfully passed all trial tests, covered the requirements of the electricity distribution network's operator, and is already in commercial exploitation after it was switched in parallel to the national energy grid.
All the three rehabilitated block - 1, 2 and 3 - currently operate together with the sulphur purification installations, connected to them. After the repair the gross capacity of each of them rose from 210 to 227 megawatts and thus the plant's aggregate capacity reached 681 megawatts. Together with that, the quantity of sulphur dioxide, emitted into the atmosphere by the station is purified more than 94 per cent. Only unit 4 remains out of operation but its repair goes on as well.
Practically, Maritsa Iztok-3 is the first and only thermoelectric power plant operating on lignite coal, not only in Bulgaria but also in the whole of Southeastern Europe, which currently works entirely in harmony with EU ecology standards.
