TENDER FOR THIRD GENERATION MOBILE OPERATORS TO BE HELD IN MARCH
In end-March at the latest the Commission for Regulation of Telecommunications (CRT) will hold a tender for granting three licences to third generation mobile operators, working as per the UMTS standard, CRT's Chairperson Gergana Serbova announced at a press conference on Wednesday (January 26). There are five candidates for the establishment of third generation GSM networks. They are: the currently operating MobilTel, GloBul and BTC, as well as First Place (registered in the UK) and the Swiss telecom Tele. During the week the CRT approved the tender dossiers for participation in the procedure for obtaining UMTS-licences. The dossiers could be purchased after February 10. The tender will be open, with secret bidding. Within two years after getting the licence the operators should start providing the most state-of-the-art telecom services to at least 20% of the population. The improvement of work regarding collection of information about the state, development, and tendencies in the sector, will be CRT's priorities in 2005, Ms. Serbova pointed out. The CRT should also deepen its supervision and evaluation of telecoms with a significant influence on the market. The preparation of a detailed analysis about the market positions of mobile operators after the real appearance of the third GSM-operator will be an accent in CRT's work, insiders added.
