SOFIA AIRPORT'S PROJECT STARTS WITH FORTIFICATION OF THE ISKAR RIVER
The fortification of the Iskar river's banks near Sofia Airport will be completed by the autumn of 2003. This was announced by Vladimir Zhekov, Head of the Reconstruction, Development and Expansion Directorate of the airport. Fortification measures are necessitated by the real threat of floods according to experts as river bed is by about 15 m higher than the terrain where new airport's facilities are to be constructed. Therefore fortification is an obligatory condition we must fulfil according to agreements with foreign donors before reconstruction and modernization of the airport to be stared.The fortification works were launched about end-September and are supposed to continue for nine months. Insiders comment, however, that work will be interrupted in the winter and so the project is expected to be finalized in exactly one year's time. The initiative costs BGN5MN which have been provided by the General Directorate Civil Aeronautical Administration and by the Air Traffic Management State Enterprise. The project will be performed by Geotechnomin Ltd and will employ 2,000 people.
