RECONSTRUCTED RAILWAY SECTION DOUPNITSA-KOULATA OPENED BY THE PREMIER
Prime Minister Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha opened on December 19 the electrified and reconstructed railway road Doupnitsa-Koulata. This was the last stage of the Bulgarian part of the section of Transport Corridor No 4 from Berlin to Istanbul. The project was financed under the European Union's PHARE Programme - Transborder Cooperation by EUR33,064,142. The construction which started in June 1999 is the largest project, implemented in Bulgaria so far under PHARE. It was aimed to introduce the European standards for the quality of the railway network in Bulgaria and increase the average speed along it.
