FILM FESTIVALS IN VARNA
The 12th international film festival Love Is Folly was opened in Varna on August 27 with the Eternal Music of the famous American director Irwin Winkler. The movie is dedicated to the life and work of the well-known author of musicals Cole Porter. For the first time this year the 26th festival of the Bulgarian feature film, Golden Rose, is held within the framework of the international movie marathon. By September 4 citizens and guests of the seaside city will have the opportunity to choose between 54 films from 15 countries. Fifteen Bulgarian movies will be shown as well, most of them first-runs.The programme of Love Is Folly includes movies from Hungary, Austria, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Italy and Sweden. Bulgarian films still cannot find a path to the audience and are in a very delicate and fragile situation. The aim of the festival is to popularize the Bulgarian cinematography and help it out of the oblivion, Alexander Grozev, Executive Director of the National Film Centre, said for the BANKER weekly. He pointed out that the average number of viewers of a Bulgarian movie is currently between 2,000 and 5,000. The most successful Bulgarian film in recent years has been Letter to America, which gathered an audience of about 17,000.The festivals will be closed with prize awarding ceremonies. Sixteen Bulgarian films will be competing for the Golden Rose. They will be appraised by a jury, chaired by Prof. Vera Naidenova. Another twelve movies will rival for the Golden Aphrodite. The jury in Love Is Folly is chaired by the film critic Bozhidar Manov.
