100% Subsidizing for Organic Farming Promised under SAPARD After 2001 Farmers who grow organic products will be entitled to 100% subsidizing under SAPARD as of 2002, Agriculture Minister Ventsislav Vurbanov said Sunday at a Festival of Organic Farming, quoted by the press office of the ministry. Participating in the event was also Environment Minister Evdokiya Maneva. Subsidies will be made available to producers in advance, Vurbanov explained. The Agriculture Ministry has already designed a sign for organic products and will invite a competition for a certification authority shortly. This authority may be a commercial corporation but the government will keep the control over organic farming under rules for production of organic products of plant and animal origin, which have already been prepared. The Festival of Organic Farming was organized by the Bio-Universe Foundation which is implementing a project for development of organic farming in the central Balkan Range. The project is for training of, and expert support to, farmers, and is funded by the Swiss Government. George Kapt of the Swiss Embassy in Sofia said that the Swiss Government will provide additional resources for development of organic farming in Bulgaria.
