A BREATH OF FRESH AIR FOR HEALTH CARE
Instead of 3.8% of the gross domestic product (GDP) the Finance Minister Milen Velchev will propose to the Cabinet to vote 4.2% of the GDP for health care. This means that Bulgarians may count on BGN1.466BN for medical treatment in 2003, up BGN113Mn from this year. According to data of the World Health Organisation, the lowest percentage for health care in the developed countires is 6% of the GDP. Experts said that despite the difference in standards for financing, the increase could be considered a success, as initially BGN1.365BN was projected for health care in 2003. BGN731MN of the money earmarked for next year is NHIF's budget. The budget subsidies which the hospitals will get through the Ministry of Health Care amount to BGN480MN..
